SIDE 1: Between 1961 and 1981, nearly 495,000 people registered with the Cuban Refugee Program. Many passed through the Freedom Tower, which operated as the Cuban Refugee Center or El Refugio from 1962 to 1974. Immigration services provided included the processing of identification cards, economic and food assistance, medical attention, and employment leads. Supported by the US Migration and Refugee Assistance Act of 1962, the resettlement services available led to some Cubans moving to other parts of the United States, while many others remained in Miami and contributed to shaping the city’s future. This building site is an integral part of the history of Miami and a national symbol of liberty sought and found by Cuban refugees who came to the United States. This building stands as an emblem of Miami’s first economic boom and later a beacon of hope, freedom, and inspiration in the evolving history of Miami and the US.
